Greetings, Smithfield Youth Basketball Parents, Coaches and Players, Another successful winter season of Smithfield recreational and travel basketball is complete! We are proud of the effort the players put in to learn the game and perform their best. It’s great to see the kids have fun and grow and we are already looking forward to summer league. But before we dive too deep into that – there is exciting news to share! The two youth leagues – Smithfield Youth Basketball Association and Smithfield Girls Basketball League – are taking steps to merge. While we have been successful in creating opportunities for kids to play, both leagues feel they can be much better by providing more (and improved) opportunities for more girls and boys. Combining the resources and strengths of both leagues will only serve to greatly expand the chance for kids to play, have fun, become better players and make friends. In the coming months you can expect to see: a combined girls and boys website, a singular girls and boys registration process and location, the creation of a united, aligned board of directors, and much more. It won’t be perfect and will take time, but it’s undoubtedly the path to an improved experience for all. We Need Your Help If you’re interested in joining the board, please contact Jeff Swallow at jeffswallow@verizon.net by Tuesday, April 12. For those who are interested, we will host an informational session in the very near future (details coming soon). Only through your involvement, however small or large, can we grow the game and create fun for Smithfield boys and girls. Thank you!

Good afternoon SYBA Parents!
At 5pm today, March 4th, the Governor’s Executive Order regarding masks will expire which means Smithfield schools will be moving to having masks be optional. As SYBA has been following Smithfield schools' directive regarding this, we will do the same.
Therefore mask wearing for all players, coaches and fans will now be optional for what remains of our winter rec season. This includes all practices tonight, Friday March 4th, and tomorrow's games.
My thanks goes out to all of our parents, coaches and players for the cooperation you all have displayed regarding mask wearing. Our relationship with the schools dictate we follow whatever directives they have in place so I appreciate everyone toeing the line this Winter season. It's been a HUGE help.

Hello parents, I regret to inform all of you that once again in anticipation of severe Winter weather this evening and overnight, Smithfield has chosen to close the schools both tonight, Friday 2/4 and tomorrow, Saturday 2/5. Therefore any and all SYBA recreational practices, games and programs set to take place either tonight or tomorrow are hereby CANCELED. Coaches please take the time to get in touch with your parents regarding this. SYBA Travel Teams have different schedules and different towns they possibly are playing in that would dictate whether they still have a game or not. If your child plays for a SYBA Travel Team please keep in touch with your Head Coach as to whether or not your Travel Game has been effected. Lastly, with both the entire schedules from last week and this week being shut out we will be looking at whether or not games can be rescheduled/made up. Please be aware that with limited gym space SYBA might need to use weeknight practice times to make up games or may simply not be able to make them up at all. Both the league and your rec coach will let you know if make up games do end up being something that occur. Thank you all for your understanding. It is very much appreciated.

SYBA Current and Future Coaches, you are invited to join us for our 2nd coaching clinic session this Sunday. Whether you are a current coach, thinking about coaching or a parent who wants to learn more about basketball, this clinic is for you. Led by experienced coaches, this clinic will demonstrate drills, basic offense and defense, show the basic principles we are using in practices and games, and answer your questions. If you attended the 1st clinic, we will be expanding upon what we shared then. If you didn’t make it to the first one, this is a great time to join us. The concepts we share are easy to pick up and we will review the material covered in the first clinic. In short, be sure to attend – you will learn something new no matter what your experience. Sunday, January 30 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Gallagher Middle School If you have any questions, please reach out to John Wozniak (johnwozniak24@hotmail.com).
Thank you!

Good evening, SYBA is happy to announce we have found enough coaches and kids to begin the High School Division! Teams will be getting picked tomorrow and emails by coaches will be going out afterward letting you know which team your son will be on. Game times will be 3pm and 4:10pm on Saturday and your coach will let you know which game time belongs to their team. My thanks to all the high school age kids who hung in there through this delayed start to get it underway. Here's to a fun season!

Welcome to another year of Smithfield Youth Basketball! We are thrilled to play our winter season this year. Games start tomorrow! We are implementing a few new things this year, including emphasizing man-to-man defense in most of our age groups and conducting coaching clinics throughout the year. Both efforts are designed to improve simple skill development for players of all ages and abilities. Games will be this weekend and next weekend and then we will break for two weeks while the schools close for the Holidays. Game action will return on Saturday, January 8th. We welcome family and friends to attend the games. To attend, everyone must follow the rules and protocols. These are a combination of league and school rules. To name a few: - Please arrive on time for your game and stay off the court when it’s not your time – our schedule is extremely tight, and we need to move these games along so that everyone plays within their allotted time.
- Players are not to bring their personal basketball on game days. Coaches will bring game balls.
- Do NOT bring any food or drinks (including coffee) other than water and sports drinks into the schools. We need to keep the gyms clean, and this is in compliance with rules that have ALWAYS been in place.
- As an organization SYBA will be following common school Covid protocols. If your child has had a positive test or has been considered a close contact at school and is quarantined from school please extend that courtesy to teammates as well and keep them from joining practice or games while under their quarantine.
- Lastly, please follow mask guidelines. Anyone entering the schools must have a mask on at all times – coaches, players, fans, etc.
We are looking forward to a great season of fun and watching our players develop. Thank you and here's to a fun rec season!

Hello folks! On Wednesday 11/17 and Thursday 11/18 (next week) SYBA will be holding evaluation nights for each of its divisions. Evaluation nights are held in an effort to try and make our teams as fair as possible. Here are the division break downs: Wednesday, 11/17 U12: 6:15pm at Gallagher U14: 7:45pm at Gallagher Thursday, 11/18 U10: 6:15pm at Gallagher U18 Ninth Grade players only: 7:45pm at Gallagher A few things to know: - Evaluations are quick: there will be approximately 60-75 kids seen in about 90 minutes time. This will not take all night.
- Yes, Evaluations are MANDATORY FOR ALL KIDS, REGARDLESS OF THEIR SKILL LEVEL. If there is a problem please let the league know so we can help make it work.
- Smithfield Youth Basketball is a private organization that is given permission to use the school basketball courts. School rules are that everyone on the premises must be masked. Thus:
- All kids must wear masks while inside. If they don't wear a mask, they can't do evaluations. If they can't do evaluations then they cannot play.
- Parents who choose to remain in the building during evaluations must remain masked at all times.
- Nothing is needed for the evaluations and children definitely DO NOT need to bring their own ball. All basketballs will be provided by the league.
- If your child brings water make sure it is in a clearly marked water bottle. Please do not bring plastic water or sports drink bottles.
If there are questions please feel free to contact the league through the website. Thanks very much! SYBA Board of Directors

Greetings Smithfield basketball family, Normally this week would see us finishing off winter rec registration, holding player evaluations and beginning to create teams for the upcoming season. Unfortunately, we are still uncertain as to when we will be able to utilize the Smithfield schools to hold our winter practices, programs and games. As soon as we have that answer you can be sure you will hear an announcement from us on when Winter Rec registration is set to begin. For those youth and families interested in our Travel Basketball program - a program offering youth a higher level of competitiveness than our recreation program - there will be a notice later this month on when and where we will be holding Travel Team Try Outs. We appreciate your patience as we continue working on solutions for playing this winter. Thank you very much, SYBA Board of Directors

Welcome to the final week of SYBA's 2020 Summer League! Despite some threatening clouds all games are still ON. This final week will see the three teams in each pod vying to become KING OF THE POD. Teams that finished with the second and third best records will play each other for the right to play the team that finished with the best record in the Pod. No matter what a team's record has been to this point none of it matters - win tonight's second game and they will be crowned KING OF THE POD. A big thank you to all you parents out there for making our 2020 Summer League happen. Your willingness to have your children involved and your adherence to the rules the League set up for game nights has led to a very successful campaign. We couldn't have done it without YOUR cooperation. Thanks and we look forward to hopefully seeing everyone for Winter Rec ball! The SYBA Board of Directors |

Hello Smithfield Youth Basketball Association Parents and Players,
Week 2 of the 2020 Summer Basketball League is ready to rock tonight. Week One went fantastic! The league could not have been happier with the way everyone - players, parents and coaches pitched in to follow the rules and restrictions we have in place that make it possible for us to trot this league out each week so thank you very much for that. We also had some great games that in a number of divisions went down to the wire - including a double OT thriller in our 5th/6th Grade last Monday evening! In an effort to maximize the game experience for the kids the League will be tinkering each week with the start times of games and/or the actual game lengths as we try to make the games longer and a more enriching experience over these remaining five weeks. To do this we need parents this week, even more so then last week, to help clear the area so that the next group of families can come in. This week the start times of games will be: 3rd/4th grade – 1st game: 5:30 p.m. 2nd game 6:05pm on Mondays 5th/6th grade – 1st game: 7:00 p.m. 2nd game: 7:45pm on Mondays 7th/8th grade – 1st game 5:30 p.m. 2nd game: 6:05pm on Tuesdays High school – 1st game: 7:00 p.m. 2nd game: 7:45pm on Tuesdays
The full team-by-team schedule for Week Two is up on smithfieldyouthbasketball.com.
This makes the restrictions we have in place for COVID-19 even more important they be followed and with game times increasing and the time between those games shrinking it becomes vital to our success that parents and families be leaving Deerfield Park so that the next wave of parents and families can come in to play. A sampling again of our most important rules families should know: - Do not bring anything "extra" to the games. It should be just your child and their water bottle. Kids should NOT bring their own personal basketball. They will be asked to leave anything extra at the door; this includes backpacks and other bags. We'd rather not have kids touching other kids' stuff.
- Please have your child bring their own clearly marked water bottle (aka please write their name on it). No disposable plastic bottles of any kind will be allowed inside the court area including Gatorade/Powerade bottles. Please take the time to pour these types of drinks into their very own bottle that won't be mistaken for any other child's.
- If your child forgets their water bottle they will not be allowed to bring a disposable one onto the court surface. For the second straight week the heat is going to be super extreme - 95 degrees at 5:30pm - and they will not be allowed to play without a water bottle so please make every effort to bring a clearly marked water bottle with them to the courts. We DO NOT want children confusing similar looking water bottles that are left underneath the bench and potentially drinking out of each other's bottles.
- Parents and other family members are not allowed in the court area at any time - no if's, and's or but's about it. The courts are a closed area.
- Please practice social distancing when watching the games. There is plenty of room to spread out around the courts. Families did a great job of this last weekend we thank you for that!
- Players are not allowed in the court area until allowed to do so by the SYBA Board and/or their coach. Players will meet their coach at a designated area outside the courts first before being ushered in.
- Do not drop your son off well before game time. We are taking time to prepare both before the first game and after it for the second game. 10 minutes before game time works. Again, if you arrive 45 minutes before game time your son will have to sit sadly outside the fence and just watch from afar.
- You'll see that the start times are staggered with one set of teams having an earlier start and another having a later start while a third team plays in both games. This will rotate week to week. The team showing up for the later start (6:05pm and 7:45pm) SHOULD NOT ARRIVE BEFORE 5:55pm and 7:35pm RESPECTIVELY. This is so that we don't have an unnecessary amount of people on and around the courts.
- When your child's game is over please depart from the courts and the general area of the courts as quickly as possible. Hit some take-out or grab an ice cream, but please don't linger around the courts. Parents and families did and AWESOME job of this last week. In fact you all did this so well it's a big reason why the league is even considering extending game times. Keep this up this week and throughout August folks, thank you again!
- Coaches, scorekeepers, and referees will be masked. Players do NOT have to wear a mask.
- If your child is sick (COVID-19 or not) please do not come to the game. It’s up to all of us to keep ourselves and each other safe.
- We will be scanning for temperatures as people enter the court.
- We will have hand sanitizer and will be washing benches, the basketballs, etc. throughout the evening/game.
I know much of this may seem like a pain, but we can't play without doing these necessary things. We need everyone’s cooperation with these rules to ensure a smooth and enjoyable summer season.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to an SYBA Board member and of course you can always speak with your coach.
Here's to a great Week Two!

As you know, COVID-19 has placed restrictions on almost all walks of life. Summer basketball is no exception. So, we have a lot of rules that need to be followed in order to play and continue to play. To highlight a few:
- Do not bring anything "extra" to the games. It should be just your child and their water bottle. Kids should NOT bring their own personal basketball. They will be asked to leave anything extra at the door.
- Please have your child bring their own clearly marked water bottle (aka please write their name on it). With the heat as extreme as it is they also will not be allowed to play without a water bottle. So please make every effort to bring a clearly marked water bottle with them to the courts. Again, we don't want children confusing whose similar looking water bottle was left where underneath the bench and potentially drinking out of each other's bottles.
- Parents and other family members are not allowed in the court area at any time. Also, please practice social distancing when watching the games. There is plenty of room to spread out around the courts.
- Players are not allowed in the court area until allowed to do so by the SYBA Board and/or their coach. Players will meet their coach at a designated area outside the courts first before being ushered in.

Good evening, the league learned very recently that it will not have use of the courts it typically uses for Summer League at McCabe Elementary School. Despite the school's grounds having been under construction we were confident that the courts themselves would be able to be used. That is no longer the case and Summer League will now be held entirely at Deerfield Park. Unfortunately this means the days and times had to be changed from what was advertised previously during registration as the courts at Deerfield do not have lights meaning all games will need to be completed before darkness sets in around 8:30pm. Thus the start times this coming week (7/20&7/21) for all divisions have been adjusted to the following: 3rd/4th Grade: Monday, 5:30pm 5th/6th Grade: Monday, 7:10pm 7th/8th Grade: Tuesday, 5:30pm 9th-12th Grade: Tuesday, 7:10pm We realize this may have an effect on player participation - most especially in the two older divisions who's days and times have been completely altered because of it - as schedules that were set based on the nights and times we advertised are now no longer the case. Our apologies for that. If you find that your son is no longer able to play due to this schedule change please let the league know otherwise we thank you all for your understanding as we continue to navigate the hurdles 2020 has thrown at us. Thanks very much! SYBA Board of Directors

It is my pleasure to inform you that Smithfield Youth Basketball Association's Summer League registration is now OPEN!
Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, SYBA will be employing Rhode Island's Phase II guidelines for re-opening the state. This includes keeping kids limited to playing within a group of 15 children. This also means the Summer League you've been used to in the past will be different this season and each division (3rd/4th Grade, 5th/6th Grade, 7th/8th Grade, 9th/10th Grade) will be accepting only 30 kids.
Here's a short Q&A to answer some of the more pertinent questions:
How is it possible for SYBA to play? If you're a parent with a sports playing child you more than likely already know the Governor has allowed teams to get together under the same guidelines they've given to summer camps: mainly that a limit of 15 children may gather and play/practice together as long as it is the SAME group that continues to consistently play/practice with each other. This helps mitigate the spread of the virus by limiting the amount of youth your child is coming into contact with.
How will teams be able to play competitively with one another? By playing 3 on 3 half court basketball. Three teams of five players each will be able to compete against one another in "Pods", groups of three teams that play each other week in and week out. For example in the 5th/6th Grade Division, Pod 1 would consist of Team 1, Team 2 and Team 3 and only play each other while Pod 2 would see Teams 4, 5 and 6 playing solely against one another.
What if come August this 15 or less restriction changes? Will the league switch to playing 5 on 5? No. Even if the Governor lifts restrictions and allows more kids to compete against one another we would not change the format of the league; it would stay 3 on 3 half court.
What we could do if that were to happen is allow teams from different Pods that are within the same age group to compete against each other.
What will SYBA be doing to keep kids as safe as possible? SYBA will be following current CDC protocols including: - Using Rubber basketballs that can be disinfected during play. Basketballs will also be changed after each game.
- Limiting the court area inside the fence to players, referees and coaches whose game is currently taking place as well as operations personnel. Youth that have an upcoming game will be prohibited from entering the fenced in court area until their gametime is announced.
- Hand sanitizer will be provided at each scorer's table and be used before tipoff, each time a substitution comes off the court and at the conclusion of each game before leaving the courts to go home.
- Coaches, Scorekeepers and Timekeepers will be required to wear masks.
Will this year's Summer League still cost the same as past seasons? Yes, unfortunately the total cost per child for the league to play 3 on 3 is the same as play 5 on 5 and so the price to play will remain $65. Discounts for multiple children will still apply.
When will Summer League begin? SYBA's 2020 Summer League is set to tip off on Monday July 20.
When will registration begin? Registration for SYBA's 2020 Summer League opened on Monday, June 22, on the Smithfield Youth Basketball website with limited space available. Again, we will only be accepting 30 kids per division on a first come, first serve basis with your child's division being the grade they just completed.
Here's to another fun Summer of hoops!

Good Morning! I hope this note meets with every single member of our basketball community, both past and present, having been able to stay safe and healthy during this time. Just a reminder that any high school senior who has played or participated in SYBA over the years (this is not limited to those having played or participated this past calendar year) and who will be attending college next fall has the opportunity to apply for a 2020 SYBA Scholarship. Both the amount of the scholarship, as well as the amount of candidates that receive a scholarship, are decided on by the SYBA Board of Directors and vary from year to year based on the strength of the individual candidate's resume and the strength of the applicant pool. The deadline for receiving applications is May 1, 2020. Please see the application for any questions you may have. Any further questions beyond that, please let me know. Thank you! Damien Edsall - SYBA President

Come on down to the high school tonight and support the 3rd Place Smithfield Boys Varsity as they take on 2nd Place LaSalle Academy. The Sentinels are having a terrific season sporting a 10-5 Conference record in Division 1 play.
Tonight's game will feature a "White Out" in the stands; the school is asking everyone in attendance to please wear a white tee shirt/long-sleeve/sweatshirt as a show of support for the boys as they take on their rival in this big game! Thank you everyone. Go Sentinels!

The 2019-2020 Rhode Island Youth Basketball Association (RIYBA) tournament season is underway and Smithfield Youth Basketball's Travel Teams have begun competing! Four of our six Travel Teams saw action this past weekend in Coventry and we wanted to acknowledge the special success our 5th & 6th Grade teams had in taking home Championships.
The Smithfield 5th Graders rolled over Chariho 44-18, Westerly 63-44, North Kingstown 35-7 in the semis, and finally Cumberland 50-23 in the Championship Game on their way to capturing the crown!
Meanwhile, the 6th Graders defeated Warwick 37-21, Burriville 49-21, North Kingstown 28-14 in the semis and East Greenwich 37-27 in the Championship Game on the way to their title! The RIYBA season is a long one with many tournaments still to go so congratulations to the boys on both teams for having such early season success! If you wish, you can follow all the travel teams - and our rec league too - at SYBA's newly renovated Facebook page.

On March 16th, Smithfield Youth Basketball capped off its Winter Recreation Season by celebrating Championship Saturday! Four teams were crowned their division's champion in what was a fun-filled afternoon of games for all of the players, coaches and families involved. U10 Division Champions: Boston Celtics Sponsored by: Tom Antoske, CPA

Players (L to R): John Rinaldi, William Busam, Matthew Gorvett, Tristen Brown, Preston Oliver, Magdiel Oyola Jr, Daniel Marsella Not Pictured: Wyatt Speakman Head Coach: Mike Busam For the majority of our U10 participants this division was the first time they were playing real, honest-to-goodness basketball games. Knowing this, SYBA stressed that teaching and education in this division be every bit as valued by its coaches as the competition itself - sure we keep score and sure we have referees officiating but what's important at this age is that our eight and nine year old boys are learning how to play and compete in games the right way. To that end I'd like to recognize the six U10 coaches - Dave Antunes, Corey Blakely, Mike Busam, Derek Cicchitelli, Marc Desjardins and Dave Ursillo - and their assistants, all of whom gave up their Saturday mornings and Monday evenings to patiently coach these youngsters on the fundamentals of basketball and help them apply those fundamentals to game situations. A peek at the bracket above reveals just how often these six U10 teams scored over twenty points in a game during these playoffs and is itself a microcosm of how often they did so during the season. So given all of that scoring this season it was of course, apropos, that the Championship Game have been decided with defense! Tom Antoske CPA's Boston Celtics took home the U10 title by winning a much more challenging, tough-to-get-buckets-in game. The result was a 14-7 victory over Willy's Precision Towing's L.A. Lakers - who themselves had upset the #1 seeded team in the semi-finals. The game was proof the C's had learned enough fundamentals on both sides of the ball to win with either offense or defense. Congratulations to the Celtics, the Lakers and to all of the coaches, parents and players who made our 2018-19 U10 Division a special one to have played in! U12 Division Champions: Michigan Wolverines Sponsored by: Douglas Lumber
Back (L to R): Lucas Bilotti, George Muldowney, Harry Arsenis, Shane Trainor Front: Matthew Ladouceur, Corey Lampron, Ben Cicchitelli, Ian Butash, Ben Johnson-McMahon, Shaun Dwyer Coaches (L to R): Dennis Dwyer, Head Coach and Kevin Muldowney, Assistant
Fun fact: the 2018-19 SYBA Playoffs saw only one #1 seeded team win it's division championship! That distinction belonged to Douglas Lumber's Michigan Wolverines. The Wolverines were a juggernaut all winter and followed up a nearly unblemished 10-1 regular season record with a first round bye and two landslide victories in the playoffs, the latest having been a decisive 42-26 victory in the U12 Championship Game over Parma Doors' #6 seeded Providence Friars, who themselves had already scored an upset of the #3 seed and edged out the #7 seed to make it to the big game. Congratulations to Michigan, Providence and all of the U12 boys on a fine season! U14 Division Champions: Rhode Island Rams Sponsored by: Navigant Credit Union
Back (L to R): Tim Kane, Joe Lambrese, Reilly Bennett, Ben Dion Front: Greg Swain, Michael Sands, CJ Ruotolo, Josh Piti Coaches (L to R): Curtis Ruotolo, Assistant and Mike Tartaglia, Head Coach
Cinderella not only found her glass slipper in our U14 Division, she ended up waltzing all over the court! In a run for the ages Navigant's #6 seeded Rhode Island Rams defeated the #3 seed and then edged out the #2 seed before closing out the 2018-19 playoffs with a 32-27 upset of Brookdale's #1 seeded Connecticut Huskies. The game was decided in the final two minutes with the Rams making just enough shots and getting just enough defensive stops to stave off the Huskies and capture the Division Title. The Championship Game capped off two hotly contested semi-finals in which both teams barely slipped by their U14 brethren. Congratulations to the Rams on their Cinderella run, to the Huskies on their terrific regular season and to all of the boys who competed this season in U14! U18 Division Champions: Boston Celtics Sponsored by: Bradford-Sutcliffe Insurance

Back (L to R): Cody Paiva, Riley Gran, William Hawkins Middle: Thomas Edsall, Ben Gardiner, Alex LeBoeuf Front: Marcus Mensah, Luc Tremblay, Liam Hickey Head Coach: Damien Edsall In what was SYBA's largest, and perhaps most competitive, division this winter Bradford-Sutcliffe's #5 seeded Boston Celtics eeked out a razor-thin 41-38 victory over 7-Eleven's #2 seeded Charlotte Hornets. The game featured stingy D being played by both teams but it was the Celtics who turned it up a notch in the second half, throttling the Hornets and holding them to a mere eleven points and enabling their coming back from a twelve point deficit. The C's also forced two turnovers - a taken charge and a blocked shot - inside of the final minute that helped clinch the victory and the title. Despite the team's seeding the Celtics win could hardly be called an upset as a remarkable seven of the division's eight teams finished the regular season within two games of one another. The exciting, hard-fought, championship contest was also just the latest in these playoffs as three of the division's four First Round games - that's right, the First Round games - were decided by four points or less including one that was decided by a thrilling, buzzer-beating put-back basket in overtime. Just look at that bracket! A competitive division, indeed... Congratulations to the Celtics, the Hornets and to all of the boys in our high school division who helped make this U18 season one of the stronger ones in recent memory! Congratulations to all of Smithfield Youth Basketball's 2018-2019 Winter Recreation Champions!

Happy Holidays everyone, Just a reminder to all families that basketballs do not need to be brought to games. We've had a number of instances in these first five weeks in which basketballs have been mis-dribbled on the sidelines and have rolled onto the court while a game is in progress thus endangering the players on the court as they run back and forth. Basketballs are provided by the league on a game day and so there is no reason for any boy to have to bring one themselves. Let's keep the courts safe and please keep the basketballs at home... Thank you very much! Damien Edsall - SYBA President

Congratulations to each and every one of our 2018 Smithfield Summer League Champions! The 2018 Smithfield Summer League will be remembered for the challenges the league faced in trying to put on its season. With Anna McCabe Courts under construction league action was moved to the courts in Deerfield Park before a lack of daylight forced the league to host its final regular season week of play and its playoffs within the Johnston Rec Center. Our thanks to the men and women of the SYBA Board of Directors for taking the action necessary to preserve the playoffs and to our coaches who showed a lot of flexibility, organization and patience in going with the flow despite this hardship. It's because of them - and our parents and participants too! -that the 2018 Summer Season resulted in great success. 3rd/4th Grade Champions: Ball Hogs - Rally Point Racquet Club Players: Noah Albert, Corey Blakely Jr, Maddox Canton, Lucas Desjardins, Dylan King, Ethan MacGregor, William MacGregor, Devin Ruggieri, Devon Smith, Ronnie Williams Head Coach: Corey Blakely In a highly anticipated match-up the #2 seeded Ball Hogs ended up pulling off a big upset over the previously undefeated and #1 seeded Box Out Beasts of Navigant Credit Union - only the second time in the five year history of the summer league, in any of our four divisions, that an undefeated regular season has been achieved. The 25-22 final score was a tribute to their unselfish play and fantastic team work. Congratulations to both the Ball Hogs on taking home the championship and to the Beasts on their undefeated regular season achievement! 5th/6th Grade Champions: Hoop Genies - Safe Spray Players: Harry Arsenis, Jared Atkinson, Chris Bennell, Connor Catarina, Ben Cicchitelli, Tristan Kennedy, Hayden Patenaude, Evan Pereira, Sean Subedi. Head Coach: Derek Cicchitelli
The only division Championship that didn't involve a #1 seed playing a #2 seed! This competitive division - all five of these teams finished within 2.5 games of one another - saw Safe Spray's #3 seeded Hoop Genies run around, over and through the #4 seeded Hurricanes of McMillen Orthodontics 48-15. Both teams had, just two days earlier, scored huge upsets over higher seeded teams to earn their place in the Championship. Congratulations to the boys on both teams on their terrific summer seasons! 7th/8th Grade Champions: Big Baller Brand - Trinity Sales
(Left to Right): Joey Smith, David Parenteau, Conner Fague, Head Coach Dave Russas, Domenic Mancino, Tyler Russas, AJ Hetu, Mikey Tartaglia. Not Shown: Jameson Lytle, Luc Tremblay. After splitting a pair of regular season games the boys from #2 seeded Trinity Sales' Big Baller Brand outlasted #1 seeded Droppin' Dimes of Anderson Winfield Funeral Home, 46-41 to take home the division Championship. Our thanks to the participants and coaches from all five teams in this division for making this summer's playoffs a memorable one that saw some great basketball being played!
9th/10th Grade Champions: Kyrie's Army - Navigant Credit Union Front (L-R): Mac Campbell, Evan Erbe, Owen Sweirad. Missing: Lance Medeiros Back (L-R): Rob Squillante, Chris Olean, Sean Santos, Nathaniel Segee, Ben Gardiner, Jayce Poland Head Coach: Frank Swierad After engaging in two close and competitve regular season games the boys from #2 seeded Kyrie's Army of Navigant Credit Union scored an Uber-dramatic, upset victory on a crazy, buzzer beating shot to score a 42-40 upset over Parma Doors' #1 seeded Warriors and take home the division Championship. Our thanks to the participants of all four teams for making the 2018 summer season of this division a fun division to play in!

On Monday evening, March 12th, SYBA celebrated Championship Monday! Four teams were crowned their division's champion in what was truly a fun night of games for all involved. Congratulations to all of our 2017-2018 Winter Recreational League Champions! U10 Division Champions: UConn Huskies Variety Collision Center
Players (Left to Right): Lawsen Fevrier, Noah Albaret, Christian Snowman, Jacob Mollis, Michael Blais, Brendan Carlson and Nick Gulino Head Coach: Dan Snowman In a highly anticipated match-up the #2 seeded UConn Huskies of Variety Collision Center upset the #1 seeded URI Rams of Parma Doors and captured the U10 crown with a 22-17 victory. The Huskies had to survive a thrilling, double overtime semi-final victory just to get to the Championship game so congratulations to the boys on a great playoffs and a very well earned victory! Congratulations also to the Rams for their great season and to the rest of the U10 coaches and participants for both an educational and fun-filled year.
U12 Division Champions: Michigan Wolverines Cavanaugh Company
Top (Left - right): Zade Abuzahra, Evan Pereira, Hayden Patenaude, Sean Smith,:Asst Coach: Derek Cicchitelli, Bottom: Head Coach: Frank Smith, Logan Siekiera, Michael Sands, Brennan Duquette, Ben Cicchitelli
The U12 Championship game ended as a coronation of sorts for Cavanaugh Company's Michigan Wolverines. The team followed up a terrific 10-2 regular season record with a first round bye in the playoffs and a decisive 49-28 victory over the #3 seeded Rutgers Scarlet Knights of Richard Appraisal in the Championship Game. Congratulations to Michigan, Rutgers and all of the U12 boys on a fine season! U14 Division Champions: Kentucky Wildcats Vision Associates
Top (Left - right): Head Coach Jeff Swallow, Jacob Waskiel, Matt Swain, Travis Cobain, Nick Collins, Jeff Orticerio :Bottom: Jackson Swallow, Chris Currie, Alex Nardolillo, Nate Gagner, Braden Crough
In what may have been SYBA's most competitive division this winter the #4 seeded Kentucky Wildcats of Vision Appraisal eeked out a 45-43 victory over the #3 seeded UNLV Runnin' Rebels of Sonic Drive-In. The game was decided on a thrilling, last-second jump shot that gave them the Division Title. The exciting, hard fought contest was just the latest in these playoffs as both teams barely escaped the semi-finals with razor-thin victories decided by four points or less. Congratulations to the Wildcats, the Runnin' Rebels and to all of the boys who competed this season in U14! U18 Division Champions: Warriors Laura's Grill
Back (Left - right): Tom Frezza, Connor Safford, Head Coach Brian Meehan, Robert Bowker Front: Allen Currie, Nick Cerroni, Mike Mancino, Andrew Ferragamo, Cole Meehan Much like their NBA namesake the Warriors of Laura's Grill dominated the competition in U18. Relying upon the same stout defense that had earned them a 10-1 regular season record and a first round bye in the playoffs they throttled the competition en route to capturing the title with a decisive 48-30 victory over the Celtics of Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home. Congratulations to the Warriors, the Celtics and all of the high school age boys who competed in the U18 program for a fine season all around!

Hello SYBA Families! The season is upon us. Games start tomorrow!
A few reminders as we head into Week One: · Your child does NOT need to bring their own basketball to a game. The league provides the game ball and coaches provide any other balls that are needed. Your child does NOT need to being their own ball.
· Please do your best to keep your children off the courts in between games, during timeouts, between quarters, at the half, etc. We have a lot of games and a tight schedule and need to keep things moving as best we can. · Please, do not allow your child to shoot at the side baskets during games. We have had incidents where loose balls have rolled onto the court after an errant shot and injured unsuspecting players. It's best for the participants that no one be shooting at side baskets during games.
By remembering these few simple things we can insure a timely schedule and minimize the chance for injury. We appreciate your help very much and wish everyone a great season and a lot of fun for players, coaches, and fans! .

Dear SYBA Families, The Smithfield Youth Basketball Association is looking for your support. Next week, on May 16th at 7pm at Smithfield Town Hall, the Town Council has on its agenda a discussion about funds that would support the reconstruction of the Anna McCabe Basketball Courts. These two courts were, at one time, the premier courts to play on in Rhode Island and for the past four summers we as an organization have held our Summer League upon them. As you may have noticed the courts are now in desperate need of repair - each Spring seems to bring more and more cracks in the concrete and more rust and disrepair to the chain link fence surrounding the area. A few of the lights surrounding the courts are no longer working as well making it more and more difficult to play games on their surfaces. The funds being discussed would not be a let's-just-patch-them-up band-aid either, but a full reconstruction of the two courts, including new concrete, fencing, lights, concessions and bathrooms. The time has come to give back to our kids and create a safe area to play and enjoy with friends and family and so we need your support to make sure this budget passes. PLEASE, if you can support the cause and make this meeting, we can show the Town Council how much improving these courts means to the people of Smithfield not only for SYBA's Summer League but for all residents to be proud of and enjoy year round. Please feel free to spread the news about this meeting; it would be very much appreciated. Thank you, SYBA Board of Directors

Parents in the Stands What can be better than watching your child play in a youth sport? It’s a special time in the lives of you and your child that should be cherished. The problem is this magical experience is getting ruined by parents in the stands. This week we’ll discuss five rules for parental support from the stands. In my ten years of coaching I have seen and heard about almost anything you can think of when it comes parental behavior. I’ve broken up fights, witnessed verbal abuse, and have seen the impact it has on kids. Before coaching, I was a referee for youth basketball for several years and again witnessed horrendous behavior by adults in the stands. This needs to change, as it is tarnishing the innocence and splendor of youth sports. Parents, the games are about the kids, not you. Be a proud parent, not an obnoxious one. Support your child without overwhelming them. Give them some breathing room to be a kid and enjoy the experience. Here are five guidelines to follow as a parent in the stands. 1) Don’t coach from the stands. Be seen and heard only shouting or cheering positive words. Your child doesn’t need you to coach from the stands; they already have one on the bench. Smile at your child during the game. You’d be surprised what a smile and simple nod of approval will do for your son or daughter’s esteem. Parents must trust the coach and allow him or her to do the job at hand. They don’t need your help from the stands during game. If you don’t trust the coach, it’s time to find another team. 2) Don’t belittle other players or the officials. No parent would stand for another adult calling out or criticizing their child. This is how many fights start in the stands. So let’s just avoid this altogether and stop critiquing other people’s children. After all, they’re just kids, not professionals. As for officials, the vast majority of them are in it for the right reasons. They love the sport and want to give back while making a little bit of money. I know from firsthand experience as a youth official how awful parents can be in the stands. Officials will miss calls– they are human– so don’t work yourself up into a frenzy arguing calls the entire game; it’s embarrassing for your child. When was the last time a call was overturned because of some parent’s complaint during the game? I don’t remember one either. 3) Provide positive support after the game. The last thing your son or daughter wants or needs after a game is for you to criticize everything they just did. Unfortunately I have seen this take place and the negative psychological effect it has on kids. Parents should avoid critiquing other players and coaches after game. Doing so is not going to foster sportsmanship or a team-first attitude with your child. However, parents should discuss the positives from the game and any life lessons that can be learned from it. Emphasize the fun of the game at every opportunity and if your child is not having fun, it’s time for a serious discussion as to why. Do they no longer enjoy it? Is there too much pressure on them? Find out. 4) Remember that it’s all about the experience. The ultimate goal of participating in youth sports should be for all involved to have a positive experience. It’s not about the wins and losses. Rather it’s about the memories made, life lessons learned, and the relationships built. Sports can do so many positive things for kids throughout their lives. We cannot ruin this opportunity for them. It’s about the kids and making their experience memorable for the rest of their lives. It’s not about the adults. 5) Model the behavior you expect. Would you be proud of your child if they sat in the stands and ridiculed others, shouted verbal obscenities, and started physical confrontations? Of course not. So then why do we think it’s okay for us as adults to do so? It’s really rather simple, we must model the behavior that you expect from your own child. Our lasting legacy will be measured through the generations that will follow us. We can use sport in a positive way to raise another great generation. What are some other parental guidelines you feel are appropriate for youth sports? As always, thanks for reading, have a great week, and be an RGP today! ~Kyle
